This CV Saviour hybrid style of resume (international A4 paper size) works really well for anyone really, but in particular for those with challenging career histories, career changers, job hoppers, those who have juggled multiple concurrent jobs, those with little work experience or job seekers who want to take the focus off their past job titles or the fact that they have very little paid work experience, so they can emphasise the value they bring to their next role. The style aims to capture 70% of the key information about a candidate on the front page. Where colour has been used in blocks, it is shading only, so it won not cause issues for ATS, and the Key Skills section uses ATS-friendly hard set tabs. For those with very little experience, but heaps of knowledge on a subject, they should use the heading Areas of Knowledge and Understanding instead of Key Skills, if they do not yet have the hands-on experience in a skill.
Clean, clear, concise writing is the hallmark of a powerful and modern resume. Readers simply do not have the time or inclination to wade through irrelevant experiences, fluffy adjectives, unnecessary details and other, filler that weighs down many resumes. No one writes tight, lean and clean on the first pass. It requires repeated review, careful editing, and a constant focus on strategy and goals to determine what is important to include and what does not support your professional brand and your current career objectives. In addition to tight writing, pay attention to how your resume is formatted. Avoid dense paragraphs (anything longer than three or four lines) and allow ample white space to create an inviting document that rewards readers, whether they come for a quick skim or a more thorough read. Obviously, your professional experience and educational credentials are vital in positioning you as a well-qualified candidate. However, there are many other items you can—and should—include in your resume if relevant to your career. These items add further value, distinction and qualification. We recommend that you focus the above on professional activities and exclude common civic and/or community-based affiliations. Resume real estate—just one or two pages—is extremely valuable, so you want to be certain that each line of text adds strength to your candidacy.
Executive recruiters and hiring managers are all too familiar with the look of resume templates and resume-template services, said Barbara Safani, the owner of Career Solvers a New York career-management firm. They are easy to spot by hiring managers, and it is pretty easy to figure out you took a shortcut, she said. That is not exactly the image you want to convey to hiring managers. The last place you want to look like everyone else, she said, is in a job search where you are trying to stand out from the crowd. Templates are easy to spot because many use outdated formats, styles and hackneyed and cliched phrases that convey personal attributes without proving impact, Safani said. They are also readily identifiable because so many people use them. Google, for example, has many different resume templates. But if you are a hiring professional who looks at resumes frequently, you will quickly begin to see that many submitted resumes have the same format, with the same positioning of content, the same graphical embellishments and the same fonts. For example, two career management professionals interviewed for this article pointed to the same Microsoft Word template that displays the persons name in large type, then switches to a tiny, barely legible 8-point type size for the contact information. The persons name will be 36 or 72 points, and their phone number will be microscopically small, which is stupid because most people in (Human Resources) are 40 years old or older and won not be able to read it without glasses, said Shel Horowitz, the author of books on do-it-yourself marketing. People were using it because it was a template Microsoft had, Safani said of the same example. It was obviously a template because you received 40 resumes that looked the same. Even if you are only somebody who filled a job once every 10 years, they could still tell the person was using a template if 40 resumes looked the same.
